The History of Chocolate

Bôi đen đoạn văn để tô màu hoặc gạch chân

Chocolate has a history that stretches back more than 3,000 years. It began with the ancient Olmec civilisation in what is now Mexico, who were among the first to cultivate the cacao plant. Later, the Maya and Aztec peoples turned cacao beans into a bitter drink, often mixed with spices, and used the beans as a form of currency. When Spanish explorers brought cacao back to Europe in the sixteenth century, it was gradually sweetened with sugar and became a fashionable drink among the wealthy. It was not until the Industrial Revolution that chocolate became a solid, affordable treat, thanks to new manufacturing techniques that allowed it to be mass-produced. Today, chocolate is enjoyed worldwide, and the cacao trade supports millions of farmers, particularly in West Africa, which produces the majority of the world's cacao. However, concerns about fair wages and sustainable farming practices continue to shape how the industry develops.
